1999
First emoji sets appear
Shigetaka Kurita designs a 12ร12 pixel emoji set for NTT Docomo's i-mode in Japan โ the spark that starts a visual language.
2007โ2010
Unicode begins to adopt emoji
Apple brings emoji to iPhone keyboards outside Japan. Unicode starts encoding emoji so they can travel across platforms.
2010
Unicode standard adoption
Unicode 6.0 adds hundreds of emoji characters, turning emoji from a carrier novelty into a global standard.
2015
Emoji becomes a global language
Oxford Dictionaries names ๐ Word of the Year. Emoji crosses into mainstream culture, advertising, and everyday conversation.

Diversity & skin tones
Skin tone modifiers and more inclusive people emojis expand representation across gender, race, and identity.

Why Do Emojis Look Different?
Emoji characters are standardized by Unicode, but the visual artwork is created independently by platform and operating-system vendors.
That is why ๐, โค๏ธ, or ๐ can look familiar on your phone and slightly different on a friend's โ same character identity, different drawings.
How Emojis Changed Communication
